State of Technology with Cary Sylvester

“Technology has made our lives easier in so many ways, but high tech and high touch HAVE to go together. You can’t just do the high tech and not build the relationships.”

Executive Director of Technology Cary Sylvester kicked off Mega Technology Camp today by recapping some of the year’s most impressive technological advances - including landing on Mars and joking that “surely, now that we’ve done that, we can create an iPhone battery that lasts a whole day!”

Sylvester also reminded us of one of our biggest losses in technology this year, Steve Jobs. “Whether you are an Apple lover or an Apple hater, we all know this man completely changed the way we live our lives and do business and these are my biggest AHA’s from and how you can apply them to your life:”

  1. Simplicity is key – The real estate industry is complex and it is your job to translate it and keep it simple for your clients.
  2. Big graphics and fonts – We are visual people. Take a look at your listing presentations and make sure they are visually attractive.
  3. Don’t listen to your clients – Examine your clients’ needs and then add your expertise to it. As Jobs said, “a lot of times people don’t know what they want until you show it to them.”
  4. Don’t be afraid to say no – Mega Camp is full of new ideas and things to do. A good tip from our own Jay Papasan is to highlight the things you make sure you want to do as soon as you get on the plane home. Then, when you get back to the office, put them on a list and prioritize them and tackle them one at a time.

Technology being the ever-changing industry that it is, Sylvester also covered some of the advances coming in the next year, including: integrated display technology, smart phone projectors and holographic displays, and the evolution of the Phablet combining the capabilities of smart phones and mini tablets.

Definitely a big development will be tomorrow’s release of iOS6, which includes features like a move away from Google Maps to Apple’s own maps application, Facebook integration within all apps on the phone to allow straight posting from within photos, and being able to FaceTime via your network provider.

She left us with the bit of advice that regardless of advances in technology, communicating and building those relationships is still at the heart of it all. Regardless of what the latest tech development is, remember your BOLD Law that states, “logic makes them think, emotion makes them act.”

Have a great Mega Tech Camp everyone!
